    Description

Civil War warship salvaged wood made into a gavel, circa 1919. About 7" in length
Nice made with nice color. With accompanied hand written letter which is as follows:
"This is a gavel made for me by the boys in the ?? shops out of a piece of one of the federal gunboats sunk by General Nathan B. Forrest at Johnsonville, Tenn in 1864 with a troop of Cavalry. Johnsonville is where the ??? crosses the Tennessee river. The old hulk's lay in the river from1864-1917 and we're rescued by a U.S. ??? 53 years under water.
The color is the natural wood slightly oiled for preservation." Signed and dated 6/1/19. Year in note.  I can't read a few if the words. A tear in the note. Gavel nice shape. See pictures.
Interesting souvenir from the civil War.
